Four days and 218 miles up a switch-backed, pot-holed road on the outer edges of the Indian Himalaya in remote Arunachal Pradesh sits the Jhamste Gatsal Children’s Community. Tibetan for “The Garden of Love and Compassion,” Jhamste Gatsal is a community, school, and home to more than 100 children ranging from toddlers to adolescents. The center strives not only to provide housing for the kids but empower them through education, cultural preservation, family, community, and health—the first of which hinges on their ability to access technology like computers, internet and solar power. Last summer, four Goal Zero employees joined Goal Zero ambassadors and founders of the Joyineering Fund, dad-daughter team Mike and Lillianna Libecki and Dell computers on a humanitarian expedition to Jhamste Gatsal where they installed computers, solar panels, power stations, and lights.
Buddhist monk Lobsang Phuntsok was trained under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to share Tibetan Buddhism with the West. In 2006, he felt called to leave his life as a spiritual teacher in the United States, and returned to the region of his birth with a dream of rescuing unwanted children. In the remote foothills of the Indian Himalayas he created a unique community called Jhamtse Gatsal: The Garden of Love and Compassion. This film follows Jhamtse's newest arrival, a wild and troubled 5-year-old girl named Tashi, as she learns what love is and how it can help her to heal. Directed by Andrew Hinton & Johnny Burke.
